In every endeavor, in each aspect of life, there are known importances that support survival – and are vital to not just surviving, but thriving. These priorities reflect each of our personal choices.
To the ancient Sequoias, sufficient rain, healthy soil, the freedom to procreate and become a grove, and the absence of wildfires are primary importances for their existence.
For the well-loved canine, having a loving companion with a strong throwing arm and a well-chewed tennis ball is of significant importance for its happiness.
For a healthy society, a primary importance is an established system of inclusive, constitutional governance that supports all individuals’ freedoms and enables us all to enjoy the power of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.
In business, importances are often prioritized in relation to viability, growth, relevance, and teams’ undeterred energy to get the tasks completed professionally and demand fulfilled to support expansive growth, maintain relevance and build for both today and the future.
Yet there are the core importances – however subtle they may be – that make viability, growth and brand relevance possible. As I was reminded recently by a dear friend and mentor, these are the true importances that are the glue that holds life together, that builds ethical communities, that puts the sparkle into every day. These importances are you, your loyalties, compassion to help, your dedication to a cause greater than oneself. To bring that passion to each and every day. Whether through a thoughtful flower given to a colleague or decorating for a coworker’s birthday. Going above and beyond to help a customer in need. You are what makes it all possible. You are the true importance. The sparkle that matters most, and transforms the ordinary to extraordinary.
You are truly important. When this is diminished, life becomes mechanical. May we never forget the value of each of you.
