With the recent catastrophic fires in Los Angeles throughout January, thousands were forced to flee their homes and businesses with little to no warning, many thinking it would be temporary and they would be able to return home after the fire was extinguished. Unfortunately, for many, this was not the case and sadly many lost everything they did not take with them. Yes, all who survived left with their family and pets, and usually critical documents and keepsakes. Many, in shock, had to find shelter and basic living necessities, and thankfully, neighbors came to the rescue, from the heroic first responders to the charitable organizations and individuals who continue to help.
And like the story of the phoenix, there will be a rebirth for those who are beginning again, and hopefully better, stronger and wiser.
One then wonders, especially after the upheavals of 2024 for businesses and enterprises that were severely challenged, from the big corporations laying off hundreds of their management staff to the small companies working diligently to service their customers, but whose growth was restricted by inflation, what should we prioritize. What should truly matter as we step back and plan for enhanced survival in the months ahead?
Possibly these suggestions may help as you reflect on and evaluate what matters in business and in life:
- Ensure all who surround you in your journey are safe and have the necessities to survive in their own comfort.
- Develop and manage your system of exchange at work as well as at home that is ethical and equitable.
- Give guidance and help to your immediate circle and expand outwardly to the edge of your reach, and then step beyond.
- Maintain a supply of basic needs and be prepared for any challenge – whether physical or fiscal.
- Possess the skills to confront, communicate and act, always with empathy and dignity, but do not fear standing your ground.
- It is ok to feel sad, and lost and possibly overwhelmed by an unforeseen event, you are not alone. Return to your core values, look up and out. Connect with your loved ones and community.
Our sincere condolences to all who have lost friends and families, homes or businesses, due to fire, natural disasters, or financial or physical trauma. And thank you to all who help along the way.
