Note from Gillian: AI vs OI

It seems today that AI is everywhere, controlling everything, from scripting our news to piloting our drones and standing in for humans in multiple industries from manufacturing to service. Like many ‘new’ technologies we praise today, their origination was decades ago, back in the “dark ages” of the 1950’s, or possibly earlier.

The term artificial intelligence was coined by John McCarthy in 1956 at a conference at Dartmouth College, in conjunction with representatives from Harvard, IBM and Bell Telephone. expanding the field of computer science. Of course, man has been developing machines and technology for thousands of years to replace human efforts, perceptions, and thought. There was the first automatic clock propelled by water in 250 BC, to calculating machines of the 1800’s to science fiction of the 1920’s introducing human-like robots. And which of us remember that early computer experience behind walls of equipment and learning the ‘new’ language, FORTRAN?

Without a doubt, well-applied technology is saving lives, developing new vital solutions of energy storage, supply chain management, eliminating potential errors in flight calculations, constructing stronger infrastructure. And so much more.

Should AI then be the new door to freedom for humans, freedom to minimize work? Freedom to concentrate on self-interest? That begs the larger question, if we “free” ourselves through AI, why are we here?

Like many philosophers seeking answers to the eternal questions, what is Life? Who are we? Why are we here? How do we find balance and ensure AI does not replace the power of human connection. Human thought. Creativity. Passion. Innovation. I say it is time to stand up for life, to share the thrill of real experiences, the joy of every moment through our 50+ perceptions, through our unique emotions, our own authenticity, through the challenges and confusions that are woven through our existence.

I say it is time to put AI in its place and share the spotlight with OI: Organic Intelligence – the eagerness to learn, to know, to share, to create, to feel, to laugh, to wonder, to be curious, to care, to experience the sparkle of fresh snow in the morning sunrise, to get covered in dirt and grime as you and your team construct a new barn, to feel the softness of the earth as you till your farm for the spring crops to feed your family and others. Organic Intelligence is core to all life; humans, plants, animals, the earth. Redwoods have been living without AI for thousands of years and we are just learning of their intricate communications within the species and beyond.

Let’s harness the power of AI and utilize it tactically to help us optimize processes, but it is vital that we ensure OI is never fully replaced by AI in business and how one develops and grows one’s concepts, one’s brand, one’s position in the marketplace.

If consumers are increasingly seeking authentic brands that fulfill their personal physical and well as philosophical needs, shouldn’t each brand develop their messages and relationships authentically?

AI may offer only drone images. OI is the awareness that one has succeeded and is eager to venture again.
